Proudly supporting Irish Cancer Society’s 30th Daffodil Day

by Maria Flood in News, Press Releases

News, Press Releases

This month, as the leading newspaper and online news publisher, we are using the power of our brands to show our support for people affected by cancer by providing high-profile marketing support in the Irish Independent and on Independent.ie. The campaign is worth tens of thousands of euro to the Irish Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day and will run throughout the month of March.

Thanks to this campaign, the daffodil, a symbol of hope in the fight against cancer, will reach more of the population than through any other media outlet, as it is printed on the masthead of the Irish Independent, Ireland’s best-selling newspaper. We have also placed the charities well known symbol on the most prominent positions on Independent.ie, Ireland’s number one online news publisher, ahead of their 30th anniversary.

Geoff Lyons, Commercial Director, Independent News & Media said: The Irish Cancer Society works tirelessly to improve the lives of cancer-sufferers, their families and the Irish people, and INM is delighted to help raise awareness in Ireland and internationally. Independent News & Media will provide the charity with a suite of complimentary advertising spaces both on and offline to reach Ireland’s biggest audience of readers. Daffodil Day may be an Irish institution, but it is vitally important for us all to remember to take the time to make a donation, to wear and share the powerful image that is the daffodil. We hope that featuring the daffodil to the 688,000 loyal readers of the Irish Independent and the 12 million unique users of Independent.ie will drive donations at this critical time for the Irish Cancer Society.”

Jane Last, Head of News, Independent News & Media said: “Everybody in Ireland knows someone – whether it be a partner, family member or friend – who has lived with or is living with cancer. The Irish Cancer Society plays an important role in Irish society by highlighting issues that affect those living with cancer, as well as providing immeasurable support and understanding for patients as well as their loved ones. We are delighted to feature the daffodil and hope to play a part in creating more awareness about the work the Irish Cancer Society does during Daffodil Day’’

CEO of the Irish Cancer Society, John McCormack said: “We are delighted to have the support of Independent News & Media on the 30th anniversary of Daffodil Day, an extraordinary day which sees people around the country come together to show support for those affected by cancer. Daffodil Day is a hugely important fundraiser which helps fund a range of free services to help cancer patients and their families on every step of their cancer journey. The support of Independent News & Media will help raise the profile of Daffodil Day in communities across Ireland and we are very grateful for the increased awareness this partnership will bring.”

Daffodil Day supporters have raised over €66 million for people affected by cancer in Ireland since the inaugural Daffodil Day in 1988. This year thousands of volunteers will take to the streets to help to raise funds for vital services such as the Society’s Night Nursing service, which in 2016 delivered over 8,000 nights of care to cancer patients in their homes.
